Research Philosophy
The goals and objectives of the CFR include reference to research that is interdisciplinary in nature. Dr. Steve Gavazzi, one of the two Co-Directors of the CFR, currently is involved in the President's and Provost's Leadership Initiative (PPLI). In his work with two PPLI mentors -- Dr. Robert T. McGrath (Senior Vice President for Research) and Mr. William J. Shkurti (Senior Vice President for Business and Finance) -- Dr. Gavazzi has agreed to undertake the following project:
The mechanisms for establishing the interdisciplinary Center for Family Research have illuminated the need to streamline the processes by which faculty members in different departments and colleges can work collaboratively with one another. In addressing large and complex problems, researchers often can be more productive and effective when engaged in scholarly activities with other faculty members from different disciplines who complement, challenge, and encourage each other.
The two primary objectives of this effort include: (1) the creation of a fact sheet that addresses frequently asked questions about efforts to conduct interdisciplinary research; and (2) the development of a template that could provide assistance in the negotiation of common budgetary issues. Recognizing that the culture and landscape for interdisciplinary research varies among disciplines, this effort will concentrate on the social sciences, although the approaches and policy recommendations developed may be of broader benefit. Personally, I want to use this opportunity to better understand how information flows up and down the institution, and how that affects both policy and individual behavior. The primary audience for this fact sheet is the OSU faculty, as well as those department chairs and directors of various centers, institutes, and initiatives across campus interested in promoting interdisciplinary research efforts.
